The Baphumelele Fountain of Hope farm is a component of the Baphumelele Fountain of Hope project, that provides young people aged 18-21, who have been raised in residential care or who have recently been orphaned or who are vulnerable, with a safe and nurturing environment.
Here, they are taught a new skill set - including how to grow their own food - gaining hands on farming experience in the projects on-site vegetable garden.
This year, their farming initiative has been bolstered with the introduction of 6 part-time staff from the local community. Individuals who have many years experience working on local conventional farms but had yet to be involved in organic agricultural practices. They are now receiving organic agriculture skills from two of the project's existing farmers, Joseph and Jerome, whom Farming for the Future and Abalimi supported with training.
The total number of individuals trained so far is 11, nine youths and two farmers.
